How do lithium ion batteries work?
All lithium-ion batteries work in broadly the same way. When the battery is charging up, the lithium-cobalt oxide, positive electrode gives up some of its lithium ions, which move through the electrolyte to the negative, graphite electrode and remain there. The battery takes in and stores energy during this process.
Why do lithium ion batteries need to be charged?
Simply storing lithium-ion batteries in the charged state also reduces their capacity (the amount of cyclable Li+) and increases the cell resistance (primarily due to the continuous growth of the solid electrolyte interface on the anode).

The measurable voltage at the positive and negative terminals of the battery results from the chemical reactions that the lithium undergoes with the electrodes.
