A typical redox flow battery cell in a battery stack consists of two electrodes to facilitate the redox reactions ((1), (2)) , which are separated by an ion exchange membrane on one side and a bipolar plate on the other side. The membrane allows the diffusion of protons, whereas the bipolar plate enables the transfer of electrons.
Why do redox flow batteries need a membrane?
However, due to an intrinsic fragility caused by a high filling load with graphite, graphite composite plates require a greater thickness than metal plates, resulting in more weight and volume of the stack. From a cost point of view, the membrane is certainly considered the dominant part of the redox flow battery stack.
